During the Covid-19 pandemic, the global community experienced shared isolation. By the middle of March 2020, billions of people around the world were sheltering in their homes and removing themselves from society as much as they could to avoid catching and spreading the deadly virus. Other people continued to work and found new ways to negotiate their lives.
Due to the pandemic many photographers were inspired to create work with new perspectives. The world that was their muse was no longer available to them in the same way. Some photographed the world through their windows, while others explored their domestic space as they once explored foreign countries. And some photographers dealt with the virus on a more personal level as it invaded their homes, their families, or their bodies. Each photographer created work illustrating their unique experience either from within the home or within their communities during this ongoing pandemic.
In response to or, perhaps, inspired by, what is happening, photograpHER , a global online collective of women photographers, has organized a three-part photographic exhibition. The first is this online exhibit. The second will be the production of a catalog or bound publication of images. The third will be an exhibit at Gray Loft Gallery in Oakland, California, USA when it is possible to safely to host shows in physical spaces.
For this show, photograpHER asked her members to submit work that they created in response to Covid-19 and its impact on their everyday lives or their communities. Twenty seven women from around the world responded to the call. This is the result. The show presents the photographs as a collective visual story of our shared experience of isolation, fear, change, and creating connections.
